Summary
This is our first Startup Showcase Digital Edition where we highlight startups in the alt protein space doing cool stuff!
- California Cultured - As climate change hits cacao crops hard, California Cultured proposes to strengthen supply chains by using plant cell culture to make bio-identical cacao. California Cultured is headquartered in Sacramento.
- Fotortec - Fotortec is on a circular path using the power of mushrooms. They leverage up to 40% of agroindustrial waste as feed stock for their mushrooms which can be used whole or fractionated for their desirable components. After the waste stream is transformed by the mushrooms, the other 60% is reintroduced as fertilizer. Biogas like methane is extracted and captured for compatible energy processors. CO2 is captured and fed to microalgae on rooftop reactors to create biomass that can be used for environmentally friendly products. Fotortec is headquarted in Bogotá.
- Neggst - Neggst strives to create the plant-based version of the whole egg - shell included! Along the way, they’ve made bites, scrambles, poached, and patties. These ready-to-heat products are already on store shelves and launching into foodservice. Neggst is headquartered in Berlin.
- Saku Biosciences - Saku Biosciences improves chance of fermentation scale up success by engineering the host cell. Saku Bio creates “picoshells” that encapsulate individuals cells while remaining permeable to nutrients and gases. By screening cells under conditions that more closely reflect manufacturing environments, PicoShells make it possible to screen large libraries while improving scale-up reliability. Saku Bio is headquartered in Los Angeles.
